An insight from Dominika Aranda, our Workplace Manager at EMG Solicitors.

As a Certified B Corporation™, EMG believes in purpose, inspiration and community. To celebrate B Corp Month, we’re sharing our experiences and ongoing commitment to the B Corp movement.

Our B Corp Journey

Having been awarded B Corp status in May 2024, we are still in the early stages of our journey. One of our current areas of focus is to become a more environmentally sustainable business, and that consideration has a big impact on my role. As a fast-paced, growing law firm, we have opened five offices in the last eleven years and are certainly looking for further growth across the UK. As part of our B Corp commitment, it is our goal to reduce our carbon impact by making better choices in relation to how we work, where we work, and who we work with.

We have already made some impactful refurbishments to our existing offices, as well as changed our approach to the types of buildings we source for our colleagues moving forward. As an SME, some of our existing offices are high-street based, older properties, so often not as sustainable and environmentally friendly as some of our newer premises. This year we will continue to focus on the “small wins” which will create a foundation for the future and have a positive social and environmental impact.

Projects that we are currently working on

One of the first projects I have been working on involves our suppliers, to help us achieve our end goal of ensuring that all the products we use within the firm have a lower impact on the environment. We are adopting a similar approach when it comes to our services department, as we continue to work with providers who align with our principles.

We are also working to quantify the reduction in CO2 that is being produced in and around our offices, with our consideration for the year being around finding the best way to calculate our carbon impact.

The purpose of all the projects within the business is to provide the necessary framework that ensures that the firm delivers on current and future promises that we have made, with regards to being as environmentally sustainable as possible. We are committed to continually making a positive impact for people, the environment, and the culture of business.

We’re thrilled to be one of only a handful of law firms in the UK to be accredited. For any firms aiming for B Corp status, I have created a checklist of actions that can help you in starting this journey within your business!
