Ruth Wright
Experience
Ruth trained in Durham, qualifying as a solicitor in 1991. She specialised in clinical negligence and personal injury claims including claims for catastrophic injuries and in multiparty litigation.
Ruth joined Irwin Mitchell’s Court of Protection department in 2006 where she specialised in advising clients to identify the best possible legal structures for the management of personal injury and clinical negligence damages, either through the medium of a Court of Protection Deputyship or a Personal Injury Trust. Ruth was promoted to partner in 2009.
Ruth joined Potter Rees Dolan in 2014 and was promoted to Partner and Head of Department before joining EMG Solicitors in April 2023.
Ruth acts for Property and Affairs Deputyship clients across the full spectrum of issues, her particular expertise lies in acting as Deputy for adults and children with brain injuries (as a result of clinical negligence or personal injury) in receipt of substantial damages. She is acknowledged as having the skills, knowledge, understanding and expertise to manage particularly challenging clients and difficult cases. Cases are regularly referred to her by other professionals including Counsel.
Ruth was the first professional deputy appointed by the Courts in St. Helena. She has experience of cross jurisdiction cases and recent cases include Potter Rees Dolan Trust Corporation Ltd v WL and Anor [2023] EWCOP 19 and Warrington Borough Council v Y & ORs [2023] EWCOP 27.
Ruth has been appointed as deputy in her own name and as a Director of two Trust Corporations for over two hundred clients over the years she has been practicing in this area. She also acts as a professional Trustee for children awarded damages and for vulnerable adults with the capacity to manage their financial. As well as acting as a professional Deputy and Trustee, Ruth also advises lay deputies.
Ruth also has experience of providing expert and is regularly instructed by other firms of solicitors acting for both defendants and claimants to prepare reports for the Court on future Court of Protection costs. She has given evidence in Court and before CICA panels.
Training
Ruth has spoken to a variety of audiences on Deputyship matters including case managers, counsel and BABICM. She has also provided training on Court of Protection matters.
