Abigail Darby

Trainee Solicitor

Job Role at EMG

I am a Trainee Solicitor at the firm and joined EMG in September 2022. As a trainee, I will be spending six months in four departments before I choose which I would like to qualify into. When I first joined, I was snapped up by the residential conveyancing department for a month to help out our lovely team in Gosforth. Then in early October our fantastic Court of Protection property and affairs department grabbed me back to begin my training contract. Having never experienced Court of Protection work before, it has been a great opportunity to learn something new and assisting clients who lack the capacity to make decisions for themselves, particularly in relation to their finance and proprietary affairs.

I graduated from Newcastle University in 2020 with an undergraduate law degree. I then went straight to Northumbria University to complete my Masters in Legal Practice. During this time, I was interviewing at EMG for a training contract position and was told in early 2021 that I had been accepted and would begin my journey to become a solicitor in September 2022. As a result, I had a year gap to fill so once the bulk of my course and exams were finished with only my dissertation to go, I decided to move to London to work for a year. I worked as a paralegal for an estate agent who had a contract with a council to acquire and renovate properties for those on housing lists and Afghan refugees. I worked with the solicitors to help with the legal purchase of these properties, seeing the process through from sale agreed to completion.

What do you like about working at EMG?

EMG is set apart by just how far they are willing to go for their staff and clients. Nothing is ever too much trouble, and all the staff are super friendly and approachable! It’s just a bonus that we also love throwing a ball or two!

Outside of EMG?

In my free time you can usually find me socialising with friends and family, binge watching the latest documentaries and horror movies on Netflix or going for walks along the coast (in all weathers!).
