Fionnuala Cottrell

Trainee Solicitor

Job Role at EMG

I joined EMG in September 2022 as a Trainee Solicitor. As part of this role, I work six-month seats in four different practice areas, and my first seat is in Litigation. My role on the team relates mainly to assistance with case management and preparation of documents as well as liaising with clients and looking into new enquiries.

I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, USA and left home in 2018 to study my LLB at Durham University where I graduated with First Class Honours. In 2021, I undertook my LLM (incorporating the LPC) at BPP University in Manchester.

Whilst at university, I worked several years for an academic conferencing and publishing company – coordinating large-scale international events and managing the training of other staff members. Whilst I really enjoyed this work, in March 2021, I was thrilled to be offered the opportunity to pursue a career in law through a training contract with EMG.

What do you like about working at EMG?

EMG is an exceptionally warm and friendly place to work. Everyone goes above and beyond to support both clients and other staff members, and this makes it a genuinely supportive and encouraging work environment.

Outside of EMG?

In my free time, I enjoy being as adventurous as I can be – exploring new places in the North East and beyond, going to live music venues, and spending time outside camping, wild swimming and walking.

I also try to volunteer regularly with various homeless aid organisations and as an ambassador for an LGBT+ youth charity.
