Job Role at EMG
I am a Client Executive on the Court of Protection Team at EMG Solicitors having joined the firm in September 2019. I assist clients who lack capacity with the day-to-day management of their finances and affairs to ensure their money and property are safeguarded whilst still being able to enjoy life. I also assist the trustees in the management of the day-to-day finances of personal injury trusts.
After I graduated from Northumbria University with a Bachelor of Science honours degree in Geography, I spent most of my working career to date in the public sector where I started off at HMRC Stamp Taxes before moving into self-employment as a Stamp Duty Land Tax Consultant. In 2009 I joined a local authority’s Council Tax team and in 2013 moved to their Court of Protection Team where we acted as appointee or deputy for over 300 clients and also dealt with Community Funerals for those who passed away in the community and had no next of kin. This involved liaising with the Coroner’s Office, visiting their property to search for a Will, Funeral Plan or Bank Statement, registering the death, dealing with the Funeral Director and liaising with any family members who were subsequently found. During my time there I dealt with a wide variety of straightforward and complex applications to the Court of Protection including the appointment or discharge of a deputy, permission to purchase/sell a property, and make a gift on a client’s behalf. I also expanded my knowledge of the state benefits system, assisted the Adult Social Care teams in any safeguarding proceedings, completed the annual returns to the Office of the Public Guardian, was a major part in the implementation of the team’s procedures and provided support to colleagues with their day-to-day work. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge in Court of Protection of having to move from one issue to the next at a very fast pace and constantly having to switch your brain between different modes of thinking.
What do you like about working at EMG?
I enjoy dealing with clients who lack capacity or need assistance with their finances and being able to help them as much as possible and working at EMG Solicitors allows me to do this in an enjoyable environment, whilst also offering the possibility to further progress in my personal development through the CILEX route of becoming a Chartered Legal Executive. From the moment I met my colleagues I knew it was a hard working firm who put the clients and wider community at the heart of everything they do, whilst still retaining a fun and supportive environment to operate in.
Outside of EMG?
I used to play badminton in the Northumberland Leagues, however nowadays to keep fit you can find me treading the pavements around my home after taking up running, which lead to me running my first Great North Run in 2019 for Prostate Cancer UK. A bad injury the week before the race and the reoccurrence during the race still hasn’t put me off from running it again next year for another charity! I am also an avid Newcastle United fan where I have been attending their football matches since I was 5.
