Michael Costelloe

Associate & Chartered Legal Executive

Job Role at EMG

I joined EMG Solicitors in September 2017 and since this time have worked as an Associate Chartered Legal Executive working within the property and affairs department of the overall Court of Protection team. I am responsible for the day to day management of deputyship and trust files on behalf of the appointed deputies or trustees. This affords me the opportunity to engage fully with my clients, their relatives and others interested in their wellbeing to build strong, working relationships which enable me to advise and make decisions always with my client’s best interests in mind.

Experience

Having graduated with an LLB (BVC Exempting) Degree from Northumbria University in 2011, I secured employment as a Paralegal within a crime and prison law firm based in Newcastle. In this role I represented numerous clients in criminal matters before both the Magistrates and Crown Court where I dealt with a wide range of criminal offences. I also advised and regularly advocated on behalf of prisoners facing disciplinary proceedings before a District Judge. This employment allowed me to develop respectful, understanding & effective professional relationships with some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in society. After 3 years, I moved into civil litigation where I represented claimants in industrial deafness and credit hire matters. These are complex areas of law and as such required me, through my client care and communication skills, to explain and guide my clients through the litigation process to conclusion. I am therefore familiar with the litigation process which has been invaluable in my current role at EMG Solicitors.

What do you like about working at EMG?

Quite simply…I love my job! I have, since joining EMG in 2017, thoroughly enjoyed creating and building relationships with my clients. This is something that EMG not only support but also actively encourage of their staff. I pride myself on having the skills set to build strong, lasting, open and honest relationships with my clients, their families and also other professionals. It is through this that I feel I am able to best represent my clients. With all that in mind, some days are certainly more challenging than others and during those days EMG excel as an employer and offer genuine guidance and support to all of their staff. EMG are also extremely conscious of their corporate responsibility to our local community and the health and wellbeing of their staff. Overall, I am proud to be part of Team EMG!

Outside of EMG

As much as I love job, I am a firm believer in taking time out to spend with friends and family. My team will tell you that I love my holidays! Whether it be sight seeing, relaxing by the pool or energetic walks in the Lakes with my husband and dog (a Husky called Kenya) it is these times that I am at my most relaxed. I have also recently embarked on an entirely new hobby, amateur dramatics! January 2020 saw me take part in my first ever Pantomime, which albeit daunting, was thoroughly enjoyable and I can’t wait for our next show!
