Sue McArthur

Senior Associate Solicitor

Job Role at EMG

I have been qualified as a Solicitor for over 30 years and joined EMG Solicitors in March 2020 as a Senior Associate Solicitor. I am a Resolution Accredited Specialist Solicitor in relation to financial matters for both married and unmarried couples and an active Collaborative Family Lawyer (the ‘no court’ divorce). I am also an Accredited Family Mediator and regularly mediate in relation to tricky family issues. Whilst there will always be cases where court proceedings are necessary I believe that with the skill set that I have that many issues can be resolved without such a step being taken. My approach is tailored to each client as each family’s circumstances are unique and whatever process is required be it a mediated outcome or a court order will be the one that is followed. It is vital to have a relationship with clients that is based on trust and confidence as this is the right way to ensure the best outcome. I am a longstanding member of Resolution, a national association of Family Law Professionals, both as a Solicitor and as a Mediator. I am a member of our local Resolution Committee and am the National Representative for our local Resolution Collaborative Group and our Northern Regional Group. The ethos of Resolution is to promote a constructive approach to family issues that considers the needs of the whole family by acting with honesty, integrity and objectivity by reducing conflict. As a member of Resolution I will help clients understand and manage their expectations and use my experience and knowledge to guide them through the options available to them and will treat everyone involved with respect.

I have always dealt with family law cases throughout my career but have concentrated on family matters to the exclusion of other areas of law for the last 17 years. I trained as a solicitor in London and lived and worked there for approximately 10 years. I then emigrated to Australia and requalified over there as both a Barrister and a Solicitor. I returned to the North East in 2003 and have worked here ever since spending the majority of that time in a practice in Gosforth as a Partner and Head of the Family Department.

What do you like about working at EMG?

Whilst I have been here for only a very short time, I have been made to feel part of the team already. In fact, have I ever not worked here?!

Outside of EMG?

I love yoga and running – but not together! Whilst not being active I do all things craft from knitting to needle felting and most things in between when I can manage to do so without ‘assistance’ from my 3 cats. I also love drinking red wine – but not on a school night.
